In the past 5 years, The director who won DGA award is also won the Oscars.

• 2007: Ethan and Joel Coen, No Country For Old Men |won Oscar and DGA|
• 2008: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire |won Oscar and DGA|
• 2009: Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker |won Oscar and DGA|
• 2010: Tom Hooper, The King's Speech |won Oscar and DGA|

So DGA awards are the big deal, but seeing David Fincher nominated is shocking, he hasn't been nominated to any critics awards before, and the same time kicking Steven Spielberg out is huge.
